Visiting Geneva
Saint Peter’s Cathedral
157 steps take the intrepid explorer up to the very top of the Cathedrals North tower, and provide whoever manages to make it that far with a fantastic vista, overlooking the city and Lake Geneva in this iconic region of Switzerland. Whilst up in the tower, remember to take in the ‘Queen of the bells’, an huge piece weighing in at over 6 tonnes and first installed into the tower in 1407.
However, that is not the oldest part of this iconic building, which should feature on any tourist’s itinerary. The building itself was started in 1160, and construction of the magnificent cathedral took nearly 100 years to complete. Since then, many things have happened to the Cathedral, including fires and extensive renovations. However, its ‘darkest’ hour came during the 1500’s as the Reformation swept across Switzerland and Europe, bringing with it the minimalist ideas of Calvinism and as such many of decorations were removed from this building, one of Geneva’s most prominent and iconic landmarks, leaving only the stained glass windows intact.
Lake Geneva Fountain & Flower Clock
Another famous attraction in the Swiss city of Geneva is the ‘Jet d’Eau’ – quite simply, the water fountain. One of the largest fountains in the world, it is something the city is proud of and was featured on the logo as Switzerland hosted the 2008 UEFA Championships. Located at the end of the lake, near to the Rhone it propels 132 gallons of water every second to a height of 459 feet, a spectacular site that is a must see for any tourist visiting Switzerland on holiday. Although be careful, even the slightest gust of wind can leave bystanders a little wetter than they expected!
Along with the fountain, another must do in for any traveller to Geneva is see the flower clock. Even though this is a more recent addition to the city, it has quickly become one of its defining features and is recommended to tourists and Switzerland holiday makers.
